Locally-sourced food

The shiitake block has produced its first harvest. I figure you can't get more local than one's own kitchen (and the log was prepared in Scotland too)! I've harvested the largest, and should get another harvest tomorrow.

[info]major_clanger should not click on the cut below.

166g of extremely fresh, very locally-grown shiitake.

Tomorrow's harvest in waiting.

Now to eat them before [info]autopope gets home.

The shop over the road has some tomato plants, and we have a south-facing window in the kitchen. I think that should be the next effort.

Num! I'm looking forward to hearing how much you get out of one of those cos I fancy one myself.

Did you get the ready to harvest one in the end?

We're keeping track of how much we get from each harvest, though you can tell from the pictures that they don't weigh very much.

Yep - that one fits around our trips away better at the moment. Had we had to incubate for 6 weeks first, we'd have been in Berlin when the work needed to be done.

About the only food I've ever managed to grow for myself was mustard and cress, and possibly some of the bluer bits of some cheese. If I'd ever got planning permission for a balcony on flat roof at the back of my flat things might be otherwise, I was thinking of trying to grow a couple of dwarf fruit trees, but I'm not 100% sure I want to try something like that on the current roof.

Nice! They do look a bit odd when attached to the block though, but then I've only ever seen them packaged.
